Get the Most Out of Diversity Training

Let’s be honest: no one loves the idea of mandatory or planned training sessions at work. Still, participation is essential. And when it comes to diversity training, you’ll get more out of it than you might think! Here are a few strategies to help you achieve the maximum benefit from your diversity training:

Apply the information.

If you sit through diversity training and don’t take anything out of it, it was a waste of time. You’ll be there anyway — why not apply the information and see how it benefits you? Keep diversity and inclusion efforts at the top of your mind as you go about your next work week, or the next month, for example. See how often you notice things you didn’t before. Make an effort to change your own behavior and note how others respond. You might be surprised at what happens when you take the information you learned in diversity training and apply it to your work and personal life.

Set diversity goals for yourself.

Setting diversity goals doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s just about managing your own perceptions and actions as you go about your workday. Again, keeping diversity and inclusion at the top of your mind is a good start. Try setting a goal to focus on diversity at your workplace moving forward. Check-in with yourself regularly. What have you done to advance diversity at your office? Do you make your coworkers feel welcome? What can you do in the future to make things more equitable around the workplace?

Be honest with yourself.

While you’re going through diversity training, and after it’s over, make sure you’re honest with yourself. That means being aware of your own unconscious or implicit biases and noting how they might affect your perception. When you’re honest with yourself about where you are and where you’d like to get to in terms of diversity and understanding, you’ve fought half the battle.
