5 TED Talks That Will Help Motivate You

We could all use a little extra motivation now and then. That’s especially true when it comes to the job search. Today, a popular motivational tool is the TED Talk — speeches that range in length from a few minutes to over an hour, covering every topic you could possibly think of.

We’ve gathered five of the most motivational TED Talks so you can take your pick and get that boost you need.

“The Power of Vulnerability” – Brené Brown

Brené Brown’s TED Talk on vulnerability is now one of the most famous TED Talks ever given, and with good reason. In this 20-minute presentation, we explore the idea that everyone experiences vulnerability at some point or another. While it isn’t fun, it’s necessary for growth and advancement. She backs this up with plenty of research as to what role vulnerability plays in our human condition and sense of purpose.

“The Career Advice You Probably Didn’t Get” – Susan Colantuono

Colantuono’s TED Talk clocks in at just under 14 minutes and centers around the idea that many middle-management workers are stuck in the middle, even though they’re doing all the right things. But leadership manifests itself at every level. Her talk is directed primarily at women, but men and women alike can take away many great ideas from what Colantuono has to say.

“What Makes Us Feel Good About Our Work?” – Dan Ariely

This TED Talk by Dan Ariely may be well-suited for employers, as much of the discussion revolves around why it’s so important to value your employees’ efforts and how small changes in the way you give feedback can change everything. Ariely is known for coining the term “the IKEA effect,” a psychological behavior in which people value projects that we labor especially hard to complete. His 20-minute presentation is worth your time!

“Where Good Ideas Come From” – Steven Johnson

We all have moments of creativity, but how do you harness them into something meaningful and useful? Steven Johnson has the answers. This 17-minute TED Talk discusses the ways you can put your brain into the right environment where innovation can happen.

“Weird, or Just Different?” – Derek Sivers

This TED Talk clocks in at just over two and a half minutes, but it’s a powerful presentation that is well worth your time. Sivers discusses how our preconceived notions of what is “normal” or “weird” shape how we think, and how that impacts the content we create.
