What Distractions are Holding You Back?

Finding your dream job and achieving career success is your goal. However, you may inadvertently be doing things that make achieving your professional dreams more difficult. There are many different distractions that could be holding you back from becoming the professional you hope to be. To overcome these obstacles and stop sabotaging your efforts at career success, it’s important to identify what is holding you back.

While everyone’s situation is different, some of the distractions that could be impacting your ability to achieve the success you had hoped for include:

  • Fear of failure. Being rejected is discouraging and demoralizing. Your fear of being rejected could easily stop you from applying for a job you aren’t 100% sure you’re qualified for. Fear of failure can also hold you back from offering to undertake a new task at work, or from asking your employer for a raise or promotion. If you don’t try, you’ll never know if you could have done it and you’ll fail anyway simply for lack of effort. Work hard to overcome your fear to take a chance at career success.
  • Resentment at your current position. You probably have a clear idea of where you should be, and your current job may fall short of that ideal dream job. Unfortunately, if you resent your current work and feel it is beneath you, your resentment may show to your employer. Having a bad attitude is not going to help you advance up the corporate ladder.
  • Perfectionism. If you are focused on doing every task perfectly, you could be missing the big picture. Of course, you don’t want to make mistakes at your job, but sometimes it’s better to step out of your comfort zone to try a new task or explore a different way to add value to your company than to play it safe. Do what you need to avoid error, but don’t put so much pressure on yourself that you are paralyzed and unable to take the kinds of chances that get you noticed.
