Four Ways to Become More Productive

When you are productive at work, you can get more done in less time. This will impress your manager and help set the stage for success at your organization. It can also mean working fewer hours and reducing workplace stress about how you’ll get everything done.

Of course, while everyone knows they should take steps to increase productivity, it can be hard to know exactly what those steps should be. These tips could help you take your productivity to the next level, so give them a try:

  • Make a to-do list. You are much more likely to get your priorities done if you outline what they are. Your list shouldn’t be too long but should include a realistic number of tasks you hope to complete over the course of the day.
  • Tackle the toughest tasks first. Many people get to work and do the projects that seem easier, which means the big stuff keeps getting pushed off. If you jump into your day by doing the hardest task first, it will be done right away. You’ll feel productive and empowered once the task you’ve been dreading is checked off your to-do list.
  • Break big projects down into small tasks. When you’re looking at a huge project to tackle, it can be hard to know where to get started, and this can be paralyzing and lead you to do too little. Instead of focusing on how big the project is, break it down into small and manageable chunks. You’ll be more likely to accomplish each step quickly if you aren’t overwhelmed by a huge undertaking.
  • Don’t let emails kill your productivity. If you have your email open constantly and continually stop what you are doing to respond to emails, you’ll never get your important tasks done. If it is OK with your boss, set up specific times a day to check emails – once in the morning and once in the afternoon – and don’t open your inbox outside of these times. You can even set up an auto-responder letting people know when you actually check your inbox, so they won’t expect a prompt reply and can call you if they need urgent answers.
