Tips for Successfully Starting a New Position

When you are starting a new position, the steps you take during your first days on the job can set the stage for your ultimate success within the organization. You want to make the right choices from day one so you can hit the ground running, impress your boss and begin building a solid work reputation.

There are a few key things you should do on your first day to get off on the right foot and prepare to excel. You should:

  • Ask questions: You want to learn exactly what is expected of you and what company processes are. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about everything from how a task should be done to whether the staff usually eats lunch together or everyone eats independently. The more you ask, the more you’ll learn about how you can succeed and fit in well with your co-workers.
  • Take notes: Remembering everything you’re told on your first day can be a challenge, so write down everything you can so you will be able to refer to your notes later. You may want to write down not only information on how to do your job, but also names and contact information of people you may be collaborating with or reporting to so you don’t forget.
  • Make a good first impression: You only have one chance to meet your co-workers for the first time. Make certain you come across as positive as possible. Show up on time, dress professionally and be polite to every person you meet as you start work.
  • Study up before you start: It is a good idea to refresh your memory about some of the job tasks you’ll be expected to do, especially if you have been out of the workforce for a while or if you’re moving up to a higher position. Practice using computer software you’ll need, review technical terms you’ll be expected to know and check out the job description and company website to find out anything else you’ll need to brush up on before you begin work.
