High Profile Observes Mental Health Awareness Month

Since 1949 May has been observed as Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM). MHAM is typically celebrated in many ways through media, local and national events, and screenings. Our aim in observing MHAM is to spread awareness and educate people on the importance of mental health, especially in the workplace.

Defining Mental Health

According to MentalHealth.gov, “mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.”

In fact, there are many effects of Stress and Anxiety in the workplace, such as:

  • Negatively impacted work performance
  • Lack of communication and the ability to connect, develop and maintain relationships
  • Reoccurring or excessive worry and fear
  • Insomnia
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Irritability
  • Physical distress

Focusing on your mental health as a leader will directly affect your bottom line. Here’s why: the better we can be as people, the better we can be as employees, friends, and leaders. Take a look at some of the statistics surrounding mental health in the workplace!
