Five Reasons You Didn’t Get the Job

You were excited about the opportunity, practiced your answers and arrived dressed in your interview-best. You thought you had a solid rapport with the hiring manager and made a great impression. That’s why you were so disappointed to learn that you didn’t get the job. Why not? You might be surprised.

Here are a few possible reasons:

You didn’t ask questions.

When an interviewer asks if you have any questions, they aren’t just being polite. They want to see that you have absorbed what was discussed during the interview and have some curiosity regarding the company, the potential of the position and whether it will be the right fit for your goals and interests.

You failed to do your research.

Going into an interview, a candidate is expected to perform as much research as possible on the position and the company. This has never been easier than it is now with the wealth of information available online. If you ask basic questions, such as, “What do you guys do here, anyway?”, the employer will know you didn’t take the time to prepare as you should have.

You were late for the interview.

This can be a major deal-breaker and it’s avoidable. Plan your route ahead of time. If at all possible, you should drive the route ahead of time for practice and to anticipate any potential pitfalls. To make sure you are fully prepared, set out everything you need the night before and get to bed early so that you are well-rested. Double-check your alarm and consider setting a backup.

You were not honest.

For obvious reasons, you should tell the truth about your skills and experience in the interview. Today that’s even more important because hiring managers check everything now. It’s highly unlikely that any discrepancies won’t be uncovered in the background checking process.

They hired internally.

This is the one factor that you have no control over. Sometimes the company has someone in mind before they even begin the interview process, or perhaps someone unexpected from within the company indicated interest. It’s always easier to transition an internal candidate than an outsider, so there really isn’t anything you could have done. Thank them for the opportunity and ask them to keep you in mind for the next available position if you are still interested.
