You’ve completed that nerve-wracking first interview, and it went well. You breathe a sigh of relief. A few days later, you get a call… and you’ve been asked to come back in for a second interview! That’s great news, but now it’s time to prepare.
Here are a few quick tips to help you prepare for that all-important second interview and secure the job you want and deserve.
Do Your Research
Now is the time to do your research and make sure you know everything there is to know before you head into that second interview. You’ve probably already researched the company itself, but it can’t hurt to brush up on it again. Find out all you can about the company structure, culture, and the team you’ll be working with. If possible, learn more about the person who you’ll be interviewing with, if you know who that is. And don’t forget to take a second look at the job description itself to re-familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of the position.
Come Up With Questions
Through your research, you should be able to come up with several questions that you’ll want to ask this time around. The second interview is the right time to get into more specific details of the position, like the day-to-day tasks and responsibilities. In the first interview, you probably just went over basics as the hiring manager evaluated your general fit for the position, and you evaluated the company as a good fit for you. Now that you’ve both decided the fit is potentially a good one, getting into specifics helps to make the decision final. So, come to the second interview armed with important questions to help you understand the position better and let the interviewers know that you’re really invested and interested in the job.
Think About Salary
Generally, you won’t discuss salary or compensation during the first interview. But it may very well be brought up in the second round. So take some time before the second interview to think about what you want in terms of compensation, and do some research to find out what others in that role tend to make. Then, you’ll be well-prepared to negotiate a salary that the company is willing to pay, and one that you’re still happy with.
Make Yourself Stand Out
Remember: now that you’ve reached a second interview, you’re in the running against only a few other candidates. Think about what you can do or say to make yourself stand out from the competition — that might involve certain work experience, a particular skillset, or even just a good rapport with the interviewer from the first interview. Focusing on what sets you apart in the second interview will increase your chances of rising above the competition and getting the job.
