Importance of Mental Wellness in the Virtual Workspace – And How to Achieve It

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! There’s no better time to take a hard look at mental health and its role in the workplace, even if you’re working from home. Make no mistake: working remotely doesn’t mean you can neglect your mental well-being.

Let’s take a closer look at the importance of mental wellness as we discuss ways you can achieve while working remotely or from home.

How to Achieve Your Mental Wellness While Working From Home:

Maintain a work/life balance.

When we work too much, we become overwhelmed. If you stay overwhelmed for a long time, you can start to experience burnout. Burnout is characterized by a sense of exhaustion and will almost certainly lead to poor work performance and even feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness. Avoid this by setting boundaries—make it clear that you have set work hours and set off hours.

Take care of yourself.

Whether you work in-office or at home, taking care of yourself physically is a good way to boost your mental health. Exercise regularly, eat well, get enough sleep. You’ll be surprised at the way taking care of your body helps your mind, too. When we feel and look our very best, our mood is enhanced. And that makes you a better employee and team member, every time.

Indulge in your hobbies.

Take time away from your job to indulge in some of your favorite hobbies. Don’t let work itself become your only hobby! Whether it’s painting, reading great books, playing an instrument, bicycling, or any number of other great hobbies, make time for them. Don’t let work take over your life because it will zap your mental wellness very quickly.

Spend time with loved ones.

Few things can boost our mental well-being better than spending time with people we love. Be sure to carve out time to spend with your family, friends, and loved ones. Regular communication and socialization are an important part of mental health — don’t let yourself become cocooned in work, especially if you’re working remotely.
