Questions to Help You Learn About Teamwork Skills

Teamwork is at the top of every company’s wish list when it comes to soft skills. You don’t want to hire a candidate who is a poor team player, so it’s important to find out if a candidate you’re considering will be a strong member of your team or not.

The good news is, there are interview questions you can ask that will shed light on whether a candidate works well with others.  Here are a few questions you should ask potential new hires:

  • Provide an example of a successful project you were a part of. The employee should be ready and willing to discuss their role on past team projects. Pay attention to how the employee talks about the project when answering this question. Do they focus only on their own role or do they have good insight about how the entire team came together to get the job done?
  • What do you think makes a team successful? An employee who has thought little about how to be a productive and positive member of a team is not likely to thrive in a cooperative organization. By talking with a candidate about their view of teamwork, you can use the interview to tell if the possible new hire shares your company’s philosophy on collaborative work.
  • Discuss a time you faced challenges working with a co-worker on your team. Problems inevitably arise when people work closely together on projects. You want to ensure you’re hiring someone who can resolve conflict in positive and productive ways to advance a team’s goals.
  • Do you prefer to work alone or with a team? This question can give you an idea of whether the candidate will do well within your company culture. An introvert who hates working on team projects is unlikely to be successful if teamwork is one of your company’s core competencies.
