Avoid These Basic Mistakes That Cause Job Stress

Are you feeling stressed at work? Job stress can hurt your health and, ironically, your career if it stops you from being as productive as you should be or causes you to make mistakes. While some jobs are inherently more stressful than others, every worker can and should find ways to try to manage stress effectively and take steps to avoid as much stress as possible.

A few key ways you can keep your job low-key and avoid ratcheting up the stress include:

  • Avoiding procrastination: When you procrastinate, you fall behind and have to scramble to make deadlines. This is stressful and can leave you worried about not being able to get everything done. Every time you put off a work task – especially one you don’t want to tackle – it will be in the back of your mind that the job isn’t done. Instead of wasting time worrying about the work you need to do in the future, roll up your sleeves and jump right in.
  • Asking questions when you don’t know something: Many people get stressed when they don’t understand what is expected of them or don’t know how to do their job properly. You don’t have to be one of those people. Ask your employer what you need to do to succeed and ask the necessary questions to do your job well. Your company will appreciate that you took the initiative to find out what you needed to know.
  • Taking responsibility: If you’re assigned a task, don’t pass the responsibility onto others – this is likely to make you disliked in the office and can leave you worried about whether the job is getting done right. Instead, figure out what you need to do to solve problems, complete your work tasks and take responsibility for successfully fulfilling your role within the organization.

While you can, and should, take steps to keep your stress level down, your employer must also contribute to creating a low-stress environment. If your work is causing you to feel high levels of worry and there are no changes you can make to fix it, it may be time to look for another position.
