How to Start Working Remotely

More people are working remotely now than ever. Whether you’ve switched to remote work thanks to the coronavirus pandemic or you’ve recently secured a new remote job, there are a few ways to make sure the transition goes smoothly every time.

Define Work Hours

One of the problems with working remotely is that it can be easy to let your work life and home life start to overlap. You don’t want to end up working constantly. At the same time, you don’t want to allow the distractions of home — kids, pets, the refrigerator, television — to throw you off from getting your work done. The solution is to set defined work hours (9:00 to 4:00, for instance) and stick to themAnd don’t forget to take breaks!

Invest in the Right Equipment

If you’re going to be working from home, you should make it as easy on yourself as possible. Part of that means investing in the right equipment for the job. There’s no need to go out and buy a new computer, but make sure you have what you need — a portable headset, a laptop, a comfortable office chair, etc. Otherwise, you might get frustrated and not be able to perform well, and that’s not good for anyone.

Keep Lines of Communication Open

Just because you’re working remotely doesn’t mean you’re working all by yourself. You’re still a part of your company and team, and keeping the lines of communication open is very important. Be sure to stay in touch with your fellow team members and supervisors so that everyone remains on the same page. If everyone is working by themselves without a common direction and goal, things could run off the rails quickly.

Avoid Cabin Fever

It’s easy to remain indoors and spend every waking second inside your home — and thanks to self-isolation guidelines and regulations put in place because of the pandemic, it might not be possible for you to go out in public wherever you’d like. But it’s still important to get outdoors at least once a day. Step out in your backyard for a few moments or take the dog for a walk. Getting some fresh air every now and then is essential for avoiding cabin fever.

Focus on Work/Life Balance

One of the good things about remote work is that it offers the opportunity for a good work/life balance — but you have to take advantage of that. Remember that you’re working from home, which allows you to spend more time with your family and devote more time to things that you enjoy doing. Don’t pass up the chance!
