Video interviews were commonly used long before the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way recruiters and hiring professionals did business. Now, though, video interviews are absolutely essential. It’s a safe bet that pandemic or no pandemic, your company will be conducting video interviews at some point or another if you aren’t already.
So how do you get the most out of a video interview to make it a beneficial experience for everyone involved?
Test Your Equipment
First things first: always test your equipment before the interview, several days before, if possible. Choose a video conferencing software and make it clear to the candidate what you’ll be using; that way, each party can make sure they’re set up properly in advance. You’ll want to ensure that you have a working microphone and camera so that there are no mishaps. And it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan, like a normal phone call, in place if things don’t go smoothly despite your best efforts.
Log On Early
It’s always better for you, the hiring manager or HR professional, to be on the meeting before the candidate arrives. Show up at least five minutes early, perhaps shutting off your video and microphone functionality until the meeting starts, so that you’re always on time. If you’re late, the candidate will wonder if they have the right meeting or have logged on at the right time – to avoid any confusion, be there early.
Take Thorough Notes
Just as the candidate is likely taking notes during the interview, make your own thorough notes as you conduct the call. You’ll want to jot down anything that sticks out to you as important, and take notes on the candidate’s responses to your questions so that you can review them later. You can also record the interview if your software allows it. Also, the meeting platform you’re using might be able to generate a transcript of your conversation. Remember to inform the candidate that they’re being recorded if this is the case.
Pay Attention to Your Body Language
It’s easy to forget about body language and visual cues when you’re not meeting someone in person. But these things are still of vital importance. Make eye contact, sit up straight, and nod consistently to show that you’re paying attention. It’s not always easy to tell over a video call!
