Quarantine Has Changed the Way We Work (In a Good Way)

There are plenty of bad things about the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting quarantine that many of us were (or are still) in. And for many of us, work has shifted in a big way. But the truth is that the changes brought on by quarantine aren’t all bad. In fact, there have been several benefits to the way the past year has changed the way we work.

Our schedules are more flexible.

Generally speaking, employees’ schedules have been freed up a bit thanks to remote work. Many employees can complete their tasks when convenient for them, not when a manager demands it. And even if a remote employee is held to a stricter schedule, they’re still cutting out the time spent commuting to and from work, leaving for a lunch break, etc. All things considered, remote work provides a level of flexibility that many employees find extremely valuable.

We’re less stressed (about work).

The pandemic has definitely been stressful — there’s no denying that. But many employees are less stressed about work itself, now that they’re working remotely. Being in the comfort of one’s own home helps immensely. When employees work from the comfort of their own homes, it’s automatically less stressful. Being able to step out on the porch for a breath of fresh air or take a quick break to dote on the family dog is good for mental health!

Our productivity has increased.

Various studies have shown that remote work often increases productivity in teams even before the pandemic. Some have a long-held belief that remote workers will get distracted, and their productivity will decrease when they work from home, but the data shows that this isn’t true. Employees tend to be more motivated and more productive when they have the freedom to do their jobs from home. That’s good for employees and the business as a whole.

We have more time for the things we love.

Many employees have found a silver lining in quarantine by cutting out the 9-to-5 grind and the time spent commuting to and from the office. There’s more time to do the things they enjoy. Whether it’s a hobby like painting or reading, or simply spending more time with loved ones, having time to enjoy life outside of work is a great thing.
