Are These Habits Holding You Back From a Promotion?

Do you feel like you’re always next in line for a promotion but never actually get there? It might be more than just a continuous streak of bad luck. Your personal habits could be to blame. Let’s take a look at some of the things that could be holding you back from a promotion so you know how to improve:

Not communicating or demonstrating your worth.

How will your boss know that you’re worthy of a promotion if you don’t demonstrate your worth or communicate that the promotion is something you’re interested in? You might not like tooting your own horn, but you’ll have to do a bit of that if you’re going to secure a promotion. Make it clear to your supervisor that you want to move up in the ranks and be able to explain succinctly why you’re worth it.

Your attitude.

Let’s face it: If you have a poor attitude, you’re not very likely to get that promotion. Likewise, if your supervisors and coworkers aren’t fond of you because of your attitude, there’s little chance you’ll be at the top of the list for advancement. So work on your attitude; be positive, upbeat, and friendly whenever you can while also setting healthy boundaries. It’ll go a long way toward helping you achieve your goals.

Not being a team player.

People who aren’t team players don’t tend to get very far in most organizations. If you can’t communicate and work effectively with others, your superiors won’t see much reason to give you more responsibilities. So if you want to increase your chances of securing a promotion, be a team player—put yourself out there, encourage your fellow team members, and help out whenever you can.

Not taking responsibility.

Being worthy of a promotion isn’t just about doing great work. It’s about taking responsibility when things go wrong, too. If you’re someone who puts the blame on others and avoids taking responsibility during the tough times, you won’t be a great candidate for a promotion. But, on the other hand, if you’re willing to take responsibility for your mistakes and the mistakes of your team, you’re showing your true worth.
