#1: Privacy is important, but you don’t want to hide everything!
When using social media, security is key – you want to make sure you’re keeping your information and personal safety at the forefront. Still, you also want potential employers to be able to find you. Therefore, some parts of your profile should be viewable to the public if you utilize it in your job search. In addition, hiring managers and recruiters may use your social media profiles to learn more about you, so it’s advisable to have information that shows you’re an actual person. It’s best practice to keep your photos, everyday posts, and personal information restricted, but you do want to showcase your profile picture and educational and employment information.
#2: Make your professional updates public!
You want to promote your professional achievements, especially when looking for your next opportunity. For example, maybe you received an award or published an article specific to your industry. These are the types of things you want to make sure are public to potential employers or recruiters. Not only is it exciting news worth sharing, but it will also give those looking to hire an idea of your skills and achievements.
#3: Engage with companies you’re interested in working with!
What companies would you love to work for? Have you checked to see if they have a Facebook page? Chances are, they do! So make sure to stay engaged with them by “liking” their page. Once you’ve taken this first step, it’s a great way to stay in touch with all the goings-on at the company, plus it might also alert you to any openings they may have.
