News And Advice

Insights, tips and news for job seekers and employers.

Honesty is Always the Best Policy

When you are attending a job interview, be prepared with answers to questions in advance and be ready to sell yourself and make a great first impression. What you do not ever want to do, however, is lie, exaggerate or give misleading answers during the interview process.

In fact, when you are interviewing, it’s not only important to be truthful about the big stuff such as job skills, experience and qualifications. It’s also essential to be forthcoming and honest about things like your goals, interests and passions.

Why is it so vital you’re honest in response to every question you face at a job interview? Here are a few key reasons:

  • Being passed over or fired later. If you lie on your resume or in an interview and you get caught, chances are good you won’t get hired. And if you somehow manage to avoid being fired over the dishonest act, trust will be broken if an employer ever discovers you lied. It will be very difficult for you to advance in your career.
  • You could end up in a job where success isn’t possible. One of the key goals in an interview is to determine if the person being interviewed would be a good fit for the position. If you aren’t honest about who you are or what you’re looking for in a job, you may get offered work at a company where you’ll be unable to succeed. This is bad news for you and the business as you find yourself getting fired or getting poor performance reviews while the business wastes a lot of money.
  • You may be hired for a job you’re miserable at. Be honest about questions that get into who you are and what your goals are, not just your skills, so you can ensure the job will be a good working environment for you. If you get hired based on lies about who you are, chances are the job will be a bad fit and you’ll end up unhappy.

The good news is, there are plenty of companies that will like you just the way you are if you are honest and give the hiring manager a chance to get to know the real you.
