Three Tips to Come Across as Authentic in Your Next Interview

When you are going on a job interview, you want to make a personal connection with the hiring manager in addition to showing off your talents. You want the hiring manager to be confident you’d be a good fit for the team, so you need to come across as authentic and someone who others would want to work with.

A job interview is a stressful experience, so coming across as authentic can be hard – especially if you practice answers to interview questions. The good news is, you can find ways to seem genuine even when you have prepared answers. Following these three tips can help:

  • Be prepared for the interview, but don’t memorize answers. While you want to have an idea of what you’re going to say when asked difficult interview questions, don’t write out monologues and memorize them or you’ll come across as someone who is just reading lines. Have a rough idea of the stories you want to share and the answers to the hardest questions but build off those ideas as you answer questions in the interview.
  • Don’t be afraid to pause. When you’re asked a question in the interview and you’re not sure what to say right away, don’t just give a stock answer or start to babble. Instead, pause for a second to collect your thoughts. By taking a second or two to formulate an answer, you can present the best version of yourself in an authentic way.
  • Pay attention to your body language. Avoid crossing your arms and leaning back in your chair as these things can make you come across as closed off. Consider your posture, facial expression, and even your handshake, and make sure you come across as happy and excited to be at the interview and discussing the job.
