Helping Your Team Deal With Stress

At every workplace, a certain level of stress is an inherent part of the job. But, too much stress can be a productivity killer that damages employee motivation and can lead to burnout. It can even prompt employees to start looking for opportunities elsewhere.

You do not want your company to lose skilled workers or experience reduced productivity because employee stress levels get too high. The good news is, there are things you can do to help your team deal better with stress. Some steps to take include:

  • Providing help prioritizing goals. Workers can become overwhelmed when it seems they have an endless list of tasks to do and no clear picture as to what comes first. Tell employees what their most important objectives are and what they should spend the bulk of their time doing in order to prevent them from spending too much time on a task you consider unimportant. When employees know what to focus on, they can dedicate the bulk of their attention to the tasks that matter most and won’t be bogged down and stressed out about less important tasks.
  • Allowing for flextime so team members can achieve a better work/life balance. Many employees become stressed because it can be hard to juggle work and family. If you can allow flextime or telecommuting to provide a better work/life balance, stress levels should decrease for your staff members.
  • Fostering a supportive company culture. It’s imperative the people at your organization feel supported and know they can turn to co-workers to help when work becomes overwhelming. Lead by example and show it’s OK to get assistance from others when a project becomes too much to take on alone. And make certain asking questions and stepping in to help others is rewarded in your workplace to encourage more of this positive behavior.
