Questions to Ask Your Interviewer

At virtually every interview, you are given the opportunity to ask questions. Asking smart questions is essential to both impress your interviewer and help you make a choice about whether a particular job is a good fit for you or not. During question time, it’s important to not focus on things like salary or benefits (this can come later), instead use this time to show you are serious about the position, to demonstrate you have done your research, and to get important insight into the potential opportunity you are considering.

When your interviewer asks you if you have any questions, here are a few you may want to ask:

  • What have past workers done to succeed in the job? This question shows the interviewer that you are committed to success if you are hired. The answer to this question will also give you more insight into what skills are important and what will be expected of you. This helps you to decide if the job is a good fit.
  • What is the top priority for the new candidate in the first few months of work? This also shows your potential employer that you are forward-thinking and eager to hit the ground running. The answer will provide insight into what your workday will be like and what your priorities will be. This question can also help you to get more details about whether you’ll enjoy the work.
  • Why is the job open? Pay attention to how the employer speaks about why the position is open.  If an employee left, the response here can give you essential insight into how employees are treated and whether the job is stressful with limited recognition or one where you will be appreciated for your efforts and have the potential for advancement.
  • What do you enjoy about working here? The answer to this question gives you the chance to learn about the corporate culture so you can find out if it will mesh well with your preferred work environment.

These are just a few of the things you may wish to ask. Do some research into the company to gather some specific details you can ask about to show you cared enough to learn about the position.
